Malo e lelei- Tongan Day Reflection
Tongan day was an awesome day, it was great to see everyone embrace their culture by dressing up in their Tongan clothes and the rest dressed up in their own cultural clothes. We were told that we were going to be having a whole school gathering in the hall at lunch time and that we were going to be eating a variety of Tongan food. I really enjoyed the food. Overall it was an entertaining and awesome day.

I found a strange package by the door... (Narrative Writing)
I found a strange package by the door which came from an anonymous company and I felt a bit curious of where it came from. I thought it was a bomb because I have read articles about strange packages arriving at random doors which have bombs inside them. The package said it was for Pat. I thought to myself “should I open it??”, indeed I did. I opened it with caution, I opened it up and there was another layer of wrapping paper and it said Thanks for everything you’ve done for us, it showed the address and it was an address from America, Cleveland Ohio perhaps. I then opened the layer and I saw a box of Kyrie Irving Shoes, a Cleveland Cavaliers Jersey and some free tickets to a game in Cleveland with the accommodation sorted and 5000 dollars spending money. I was filled with joy, but why was I gifted this?? I now remembered I entered a draw to win some Cavaliers gear and all you had to do was write a short description of why you support the Cavs. this was like Christmas, I was really pleased.

Being Smart Online...
Monday August 8th:
Listening to Constable Gordon made me re-think about what I am posting on social media, whether it is a bad thing or just a random social media post. He also pointed out that whatever we post will be in the records of the social media companies/providers we use even if we delete it. By deleting something it doesn't necessarily mean it is deleted.

Book Character Mufti Day
Today was mufti day at our school (St Pius X Catholic School) but we had to dress up as our favourite book character. I decided to dress up as Albert Einstein who is in the book called "The Great Scientists" and he was considered the smartest man when he was alive. This is me and my friends dressed up as our favourite book characters.
PS: I'm the one in the glasses.

Sports Camp Meeting
I was pleased that I was selected for the Sports Camp which is going to occur late next term. There have been 5 others selected from our school to participate in the sports camp alongside some students from Glen Innes School and Glen Taylor. We all gathered into the Glen Innes Primary Hall and we all introduced ourselves.
After we introduced ourselves the boys and girls separated and the girls tried table tennis while the boys tried indoor bowling. Indoor bowling is actually harder than I thought because it all has to do with measurements. The aim of bowling was to get closer to the white ball and if you hit the white ball off the platform you will be eliminated.
After we finished bowling we went outside to play a quick game of basketball, it was really fun. It was good to meet different people and to get to know them. Now we currently train on Tuesdays and Thursdays to prepare for the Sports Camp late next term.
Marae Visit- Recount
We were all glad the weather held out for us so that we could walk to Ruapotaka Marae. We were all very excited to experience something we haven’t experienced before. We followed all the Protocols/Rules of the Marae which is known as Tikanga, the protocols we followed at the Marae was to take our shoes off before entering the wharenui.
When we got inside the wharenui we started it off with a short ceremony. Matua Jim had welcomed us and spoke in Maori and me and Motu had replied, I replied in Maori and Motu had translated it in English. To conclude our very special ceremony we all sang He Honore and E Toru Nga Mea (two very well known Maori songs in our school)
After our morning tea we were split into two groups and we did separate activities. The two activities was learning a song and using flax to make a flower. The most difficult task was making the flower because the flax was so fragile and we had to ensure we didn’t tear it apart. Luckily I was able to form a flower. Our last activity was to learn a basic Maori song with Matua Jim. We learnt Heads Shoulders Knees and Toes yet it was in Maori. As we learnt it and started to get better we started to sing it faster and faster.
Year 8 Retreat Reflection
The Year 8 retreat was a great time for us (the leaders) of our school to develop our leadership skills. We went to the St Francis Retreat Centre in Hillsborough which is a tradition at our school for the year 8’s to go. The highlight of our retreat was the Candle Lighting Ceremony, we all had to light one candle each to which to me symbolised that we were in the presence of Jesus our teacher. All the tasks and activities was with teamwork, leadership and following instructions. All our meals were delicious especially dinner. For dinner we had lasagne, potatoes and salad and for dessert we had warm chocolate pudding with ice cream.
One of my other favourite activities was the Noah’s Ark activity which involved teamwork. I teamed up with Pate and formed an ark and we had to place 2 big stones on the ark. The goal was to see how long our ark would float, the aim was to make it float for at least 3-5 mins. Our ark just lasted for 10-15 seconds.
This retreat was a great experience for us Year 8’s.

Powhiri Ceremony
A Powhiri is a welcoming ceremony between the visitors and the people of the marae. This is only performed by a woman.
Yesterday before we entered the Marae all the girls were addressed to stand in the front and all the Men/Boys (Warriors) stood at the back. During the Powhiri one of the women/wahine of the Marae and said something in Maori to welcome us on the Marae and Ana-Lei who was representing our school had replied back in Maori. As we approached the Wharenui it was if we were in an army.
The Powhiri sounded like a war cry which is used to call upon soldiers to fight a battle. When a Powhiri is performed the voices of the ladies are in high pitch. During the Powhiri to me it felt as if we were in a war, but in a war of peace. The Powhiri is a very important event to the Maori people because it welcomes the visitors and takes away all the sacredness in you. This was most of the school’s first time experiencing a Powhiri.
The Powhiri was a really good experience for us that are not Maori.

Science Road Show Experience
Today was My Class (Room 7’s) and Room 5’s first Science Experiment Show at Tamaki College. In this Science Experiment we witnessed different features of Science such as explosions, volume and how different things reacted to each other.
The Instructors had frequently mentioned about 3D printers which fascinated me because one of the instructors had said that people in China had connected a 3D printer to a concrete maker which together combined construct a 10 houses a day.

Sacred Heart College Interview
I was really excited about my interview at Sacred Heart College. This would ensure the Principal of SHC that I was eligible to receive the Endeavour Scholarship which is awarded to five Pasifika and Maori boys enrolling at Sacred Heart in either Years 7 or 9. I was interviewed by Mr Dale (The Principal), Mr Leger (The First XV Coach) and three other staff.
The Interview lasted forty minutes and when I came I felt relieved and hopeful that I will be accepted.

My Mother- Descriptive Writing
If it wasn’t for Mothers we wouldn’t be alive. So Mothers are really special people in our lives and we have to be grateful for them.
My Mother’s name is Joyce and is the mother of 4 kids including me. She inspires me to do the best I can do in my learning. She is the most supportive lady in my life and I am truly grateful for all the things she has done for me. She is my angel and will forever be my angel. I know she is the most supportive lady in my life because every Saturday at my League games she is always there no matter what cheering for my team and motivates us to do the best we can and I am always willing to make her proud within sport and school .
She is a rather tanned person and stands at an average height. She has dark black hair that hangs below her shoulders. Most times my Mum isn’t at home because she looks after my Nana who has dementia and isn’t able to walk. I miss my Mum heaps during the week but it’s good to know that My Nana is well looked after.
My Mother is the most important lady in my life and I will love her forever.
Holiday Writing
The Jungle Book was originally a cartoon in the mid 1960’s but when I heard this was going to be a movie I was determined to go and see it.
We finally arrived at the Sylvia Park Hoyts Cinemas I was so moved. We made it into the cinema, I had a feeling it was going to be busy because it was the first day it was released and it was also the first session of the day. We got our tickets and settled into our seats, me and my Dad were surprised because we were seated in the “BIG EXTREME SCREEN CINEMA”
The Jungle Book was a story about a young boy named Mowgli who was raised by a pack of wolves. He was originally living in the man village when a wild tiger attacked his caregiver and left Mowgli in the man village all by himself. The Red Flower is a thing that can overpower any animal in the wild, when this occurs someone from the man village carries a fire torch which spreads the red flower into the wild and can kill animals by the fire touching any part of them.
My favourite part of the movie was when Mowgli met a big grizzly bear, at first he thought he was dangerous but the bear turned out to be really friendly. Mowgli met the bear while he was on his way to the man village. The saddest part was when Akela (one of the leaders of the wolf pack) was killed by the wild Tiger because the Tiger was frustrated that Mowgli could escape from him. To conclude this I think Jungle Book was a really cool movie because all the effort put into the movie all made it look so real with all the effects. This had to be the favourite movie I have watched and the best thing that happened in the holiday.

My Best Writing for Term 1 2016
Title: Hiking at Undertaker’s Private Island (Narrative Writing)
Date: 14/04/16
My Reasons on why this is my Best Writing for this Term:
- This is a good piece of Writing because I used effective Vocabulary
- This is a good piece of Writing because I used punctuation correctly
- This is a good piece of Writing because I structured it out like a Narrative Writing ( It has a Beginning,Orientation,Problem,Resolution and a Conclusion)
It was James and Jessica’s first time Hiking it was a totally different experience for them. After recently getting married they applied for a “Win yourself a Surprise day out voucher” which was sponsored by Interislander a Cruising Ship franchise. They received a message saying that they have won it and they were both very much excited. They were told that their Ferry would be leaving at Approximately 10 am. They arrived at the Britomart Ferry terminal and were set to take off to their surprising location.
They arrived at their location and were informed by the Ferry Captain that they were entering Undertaker’s/Dead Man’s Private Island. They were also informed that there waiting for them was Matthew who was one of the staff at the Hotel there that was called “Dead Man’s Hutt”, Matthew would help them with their accommodation. They had got off the Ferry and had hiked through the Private Island, they noticed that there were no maps seen anywhere which was a huge problem for them. Also being a surprise day out they weren’t prepared for what was going to be happening, going Hiking they had to make sure they had plenty of water but again they were not informed that they were going to go hiking. They again continued to walk on through the Private Island. All they could hear were birds whistling away in the trees, THEN SUDDENLY they could smell something that smelt similar to Cat poo and the sound of someone walking secretly behind them. They looked back quickly and saw a man who had ripped clothes and no shoes on.
They had a conversation with each other and the man had been living at the Private Island for over a decade. James said to him “Is there any hotel located on this Island” The Man whose name was Kevin had said “No there isn’t why?” James replied “We have been told that there is a hotel located on this island called (DEAD MAN’S HUT), Kevin said “You have been fooled”. James and Jessica didn’t know any way to exit the Island so Kevin led them to a boat which has been on the Island for emergencies and had drove them on the boat back to the Britomart Ferry Terminal.
They had a negotiation with the Ferry company and had received 2 tickets to Hawaii for their special vacation. James and Jessica were so happy and had left for the airport while Kevin had found his own place in the city of Auckland.

Today was our Soul Friend’s Mass. In our school we have Soul Friends which is a friendship between two people one older and one younger. We were introduced to Soul Friends by the Holy Faith Sisters who started our school.
My Soul Friend is Maraia and she is in Room 1. She loves Maths and also Loves Reading. She is my reading buddy and I hope to be a role model to her by encouraging her to do the best she can.
To me having a Soul Friend is like having another little brother and sister or having a bigger brother and sister. I say this because if we are feeling down or unsure of something we can go to them for support and comfort.

NRL First Week Review- Home Writing Journal
I am showing you that I can use good vocabulary in my writing.
NRL First Weekend Review:
The NRL season kicked off on Thursday with the newly looked Eels up against the 2015 finalists the Broncos. Broncos were victorious with a 17-4 win over the Eels. The only game on Friday saw the Sea Eagles facing the Bulldogs. The Sea Eagles dominated the whole game and thumped the Bulldogs 28-6.
Saturday would see the Raiders against the Panthers for the first of three games which the Raiders won in such a close game. The game all of New Zealand were looking forward to, the Warriors against the Tigers. The Tigers dominated the first half and were leading 28-4 at the break. The Warriors came back with back to back tries to close the lead to 2 and the score was now 28-26. With at least 2 minutes left the ball suddenly went into the hands of Tigers fullback James Tedesco where he went off for the winning try. The Tigers won 34-26. Then the last game of the 3 saw the Cowboys against the Sharks. That was also a really close game which the defending champions the Cowboys won 20-14.
The rival Sydney clubs faced off where unexpectedly the Rabbitohs led the Roosters 26-0 at Halftime and later on finished the game to go victorious 42-10. The last game on Sunday was between the Titans and the Knights which the Titans won 30-12. Then the last game of the first week of the NRL saw the Melbourne Storm play the Dragons which was a nail bitter which the Storm won in the dying minutes to a try to Kenny Bromwich 18-16.
The First week of the NRL was a awesome week to start the new season.

My Holiday Writing
Holidays, a time that is expected to do really fun activities but for me it was totally different which is usual.
My Holidays was a relaxing holiday because I hardly did anything but the thing that I really enjoyed was celebrating my little niece’s birthday, she was turning 3. It was a awesome day to go to the pools because it was such a hot day. We had decided to go to one of the newest pools in Auckland which was Otahuhu Pools. With Otahuhu being a Council pool it was free to enter. My Cousin, my cousin's boyfriend and my niece had came a picked me up so we could meet up with my cousins friend and her kids at the pools.
When had finally arrived at the Pools, I was glad because it started to get really hot. We walked in found our spot inside the pools and went off in the water. It was really refreshing when I was in the pool because the water was really cold. It didn’t last me a while to be cold so I decided to go into the spa pool. After a while I went outside where it was sunny and had a fun water park there. I played with my niece, I could tell that she was really enjoying herself and so was I. After a few hours having fun it was time for lunch, we had Pizza and Chicken Nibbles.
