In the Ancient Olympics boxing was totally different than Boxing nowadays. The boxers used long strips of leather to wrap around their hands which was their interpretation of gloves. In the early days of African American boxing they fought with their fists which is even worse than fighting with just leather straps. The boxers didn't fight in rounds they fought until someone was completely knocked out or until someone had admitted they lost. I was fascinated by this because I discovered the change of the boxing generations.
Infact the late Kimbo Slice who was a martial arts fighter started his career in the backyard of peoples houses in his neighborhood. He would often fight other people of his neighborhood and the fight wasn't over until someone was completely knocked out. The fighters fought with their fists and they were all badly beaten.

ReplyDeleteThanks and yes I know it was very brutal.. :-)
ReplyDeleteYou are both absolutely right - it was a very brutal sport.I think that it must have been incredibly difficult for the athletes to compete without proper gloves and to step into the ring knowing that they would have to fight until someone was literally knocked out. That sounds far too intense for me!
